Maryjean Zarick earned her Bachelor of Music degree at Ohio University where she studied harp with Lucille Jennings and continued with post-graduate harp studies at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon under Elaine Seely. After graduation, Maryjean concentrated on writing and arranging for lever harp. In 1987 she founded Paradise Music, one of the first publishing companies devoted to the lever harp. By far her best known publication, The Lap Harp Companion, is a compilation of 50 short arrangements for small 22 string harp. At the time, the book filled a need for moderately difficult music that could be played on this newly designed harp which was becoming quite popular because of its affordability. For her efforts in the project, Ms Zarick was nominated as a candidate for the Ohio University Alumni Of The Year Award. The Lap Harp Companion was eventually purchased by Lyon & Healy of Chicago and is currently in their publication catalog.
Through the years, Maryjean has continued to experiment with new source material. Most recently she has adapted the melody lines of Eastern Orthodox Liturgical chant to form the basis of compositions for the harp. In 2009, two of these compositions won first and second place in a competition sponsored by the Seattle Chapter of the American Harp Society.
Along with her tenure as a Music Therapy instructor at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, Ms. Zarick has more than 20 years of experience teaching and performing in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and Canada. Maryjean now resides just north of Orlando, Florida. In addition to managing the HarpMusicNow website, she is pursing a Master's Degree in Music Composition at the University of Central Florida.
